Top 2 Tuesday - Songs

Top 2 Favorite Songs...
(it's so hard for me to choose only 2 songs - so these are my fav two for the time being!)

1. Capri by Colbie Caillat. I became obsessed with this song when I was pregnant. It brings tears to my eyes!

2.
Flightless Bird, American Mouth by Iron & Wine. This is the song playing in the first Twilight movie at the end when Bella & Edward are dancing. Beautiful, but the lyrics are quite strange.

Should babies have a schedule?

I can't believe that by next Saturday, Miss Jenna will be 3 months old! Now that she's a little older, I've been debating trying to put her on a "schedule".

Since birth, I've been taking the "baby led schedule" approach. I was lucky in that she's always slept so good at night, so we've never had any problems with that. She still wakes up once or twice to nurse, but that's it.

I tried to do the Eat-Awake-Sleep-Your Time schedule during the day. It lasted about 2 days. She was so young and going through growth spurts that I ended up getting frustrated because some days she didn't sleep hardly at all, and most days she just nursed non-stop. My frustration led me to give up on that until she got a bit older. And the fact that I quit my job made it easy to say that we didn't "need" a schedule because we were at home.

Now she's three months old she has been spending more and more time awake and less time nursing. I've been thinking about trying to put her down for a morning nap and an afternoon nap at specific times.

There's lots of moms out there that swear by "schedules" and believe that structure is good for babies. I'm on the fence... In a way I'd love a schedule because perhaps it would make it easier for me to schedule outings, appointments, etc. However, the other part of me is worried that I will become obsessed with following the "schedule" to the point where it becomes burdensome and causes me stress.

Personally, my parenting style has been more of a "go with the flow", spontaneous, and flexible approach. As a new mom, I've just been learning as I go and trying to adjust things as needed.

Any moms out there have personal experiences with this? Did you follow a schedule for your little one? Or were you more of a "go with the flow" kind of mom? What worked for you? I'd love to hear your comments!

My Girl Crush

We all have them... you know, a girl crush. Mine is Jillian Harris. I mean, who doesn't love Jillian? She's the fun, fashionable, and adorable former "Bachelorette" from the ABC hit show.

Jillian is by far the most fashionable of all Bachelorettes. I just love her style. She's trendy and classy. She looks adorable in everything she wears. I hope she starts her own clothing line someday.

She will be appearing on ABC's Extreme Home Makeover this season, which starts Sunday (wearing fabulous clothes with her hard hat and boots, I'm sure).

For more on Jillian and her fashion style, check out her exclusive fashion interview on the Possessionista Blog. You can also check out another great fashion interview at Cupcake Mag.

2. Herstyler Hairdryer

I don't actually own one yet but I've used this hair dryer and it is awesome! It dried my hair super fast. I am going to order one soon from Amazon or Overstock.com.

7 things about me

I was so excited when I received a blogging award, the Versatile Blogger, from Kim over at Kimmama. Check out her fantastic blog.

A "Versatile Blogger" brings everything to the table - a little of this and a little of that.

Here are the rules for the Versatile Blogger Award:
- Thank & link back to the person who gave you the award.
- Share 7 things about yourself.
- Pass the award along to 15 other bloggers who you've recently discovered and think are fabulous.
- Contact the bloggers you chose & let them know about the award.

Seven things about me:
  1. I will have an MBA this December! I began graduate school a couple of years ago, and I'm excited to say I will finally graduate with a Masters in Business Administration this Fall.

  2. I am a "Distinguished Young Woman" (formerly America's Junior Miss). My senior year in High School I competed for the Distinguished Young Woman award and won for the State of New Mexico. I got to compete at the National Finals in Mobile, AL. It's a great scholarship program for young talented women.

  3. My husband is my high school sweetheart. We met and dated in High School, broke up when we went to different colleges, then reunited. He's the love of my life and I'm a lucky lady to have him.

  4. I love traveling (and hope to do some more of it soon!). My first job out of school was with a solar company that required traveling. I loved it! I got to go to DC, Vegas, Long Beach, and Milan, Italy. I loved Italy and hope I get the chance to go overseas again soon! Some of my favorite US cities are New York, Vegas, DC, and San Diego.

  5. I was my High School's valedictorian. I'm somewhat of a book nerd and have a natural ability when it comes to school work. My graduating class was really small, but I am proud that I was able to be number 1 and still maintain a social life! I was also able to maintain a 4.0 GPA throughout my whole entire undergrad program. I wasn't so ambitious during my master's program...

  6. I'm a cry baby. I cry for EVERYTHING. It's so frustrating for me because I cry at times when you really don't want to cry (like at work). I cry when I'm frustrated, when I talk about my family, when I have to make a big decision, the list goes on...

  7. I am obsessed with home remodeling & decorating. My husband and I bought a foreclosure last year and have been renovating it ever since. We've re-done the wall texture, baseboards, exterior stucco, windows, flooring... I can't wait until we begin our bathroom remodel project. I just love seeing something go from ugly to wonderful!

Now to pass on the award! Here are the blogs I will be giving a "Versatile Blogger" award to:

Operation Muffin Top

I've decided I really need to get in shape. I gained about 29 pounds during my pregnancy.

I've lost all but 3 lbs. I am proud to say I am now back into my pre-pregnancy pants. However...just because I can button them doesn't mean they look good! I have this nasty muffin-top thing going on and my belly still looks like I'm 4 or 5 months preggo.

I'm also extremely out of shape. I can't even jog a mile. This time last year I could jog a 5k. This time two years ago I was doing the Duke City Half-Marathon. Now I get out of breath walking up stairs!

So I've decided to embark on a post-partum get in shape journey! Operation Muffin Top.

Here's my goals:

  • Lose 5-8 lbs
  • Drop a clothing size (or at least not feel squeezed in the size I'm in)
  • Lose 2-3 inches on my waist
  • Be able to run a 5k

I am starting slow but here's my plan of attack:

  • Walk/Jog combo building up to jogging the whole time, 30 - 45 minutes, 5 days per week
  • Weight train (using ChaLEAN or just at the gym) 3 days per week
  • Zumba - fun cardio, 2 days per week

WEEK O Current Stats (I am 5'3):

  • Weight - 139
  • Waist - 29 in
  • Cardio - Jog 1/2 mile w/ out stopping
  • Size - 7 (Barely...should be a 9! LOL)

WISH ME LUCK!!!

Recipe: End-of-Summer Sangria

I made this tasty drink last weekend for Jenna's baptism party. I got the recipe from tbwap

Ingredients:

1 bottle white wine (they recommend Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, but I prefer sweeter wines so I used Riesling)

1 1/2 c strawberries, hulled and halved

3/4 c blueberries

2 green apples cubed

15 maraschino cherries

1/2 c pomegranate schnapps (I couldn't find pomegranate schnapps so I just used pomegranate juice)

1/4 c sugar

Club Soda

Orange wedges to garnish

(to make kid-friendly & preggo safe, substitute wine and schnapps for 1 liter of pomogranate juice!)

Directions:
  1. Add strawberries, blueberries, apples and cherries

  2. Pour in the wine & pomegranate schnapps (or just juice if non-alcoholic)

  3. Gently stir in sugar

  4. Cover and let sit in the refrigerator for a minimum of 6 hours or overnight

  5. To serve, fill cup 2/3 full, add few pieces of fruit. Top off with club soda. Garnish with orange wedge.

7 Guilty Pleasures as a SAHM

As a newbie stay-at-home-mom I have some new vices...

1. Sweatpants
It's so hard to put on jeans or nice outfit when I'm going to be cleaning, cooking, playing w/ the baby. Sweatpants are cool, right? Everyone's doing it! All I need to do is wear them with some boots and I'll be quite fashionable...

2. The "Messy Mom Bun" (Not to be confused with the sexy, celebrity, messy bun)
I am lucky to get in the shower most days...

3. Trashy Reality TV Shows
Now that I have a DVR and I'm home I've found myself watching a whole lot of "Bachelor Pad", "Keeping up with the Kardashians", " Teen Mom".... the list goes on and on...

4. My face sans makeup

5. Snacking (Skinny Cows are yummy!)
I don't know about everyone else, but when I was working I didn't really snack that much because I was too busy and it's inconvenient to bring a bunch of food to work. Now that I'm home and in close proximity to the refrigerator, I find myself eating more.

6. Stalking celebrities on Twitter

7. Blogging & Reading Blogs

For all of you SAHMs out there, what are your guilty pleasures?

My First Mommy Mistake

I didn't want to write this post but I felt like I should. I want other new mommies to know they are not alone. I actually wrote this post awhile back, but just hadn't had the courage to publish it. Well here it is...

I knew it was only a matter of time before I made my first mommy mistake. We've all heard the stories about mommies who lose their kid in a store, drop the baby on its head, left the baby to roll off the couch, smash a kid's fingers in a door... the list goes on. I knew my mistake would come too. And it did. It happened on a sunny August day a few weeks ago...

The morning started like any other. I made plans to run two quick errands early before Jeremy had to drive to Albuquerque for school. It was about 9:30 AM and I went outside to put the carseat base back in my car. To my surprise, Jeremy had taken my car to work. No big deal, I'll just take his truck.

I had my keys in my hand when I went to the truck. It was unlocked. I installed the car seat base and went back inside to get Jenna and her diaper bag.

I put Jenna in the truck and threw the diaper bag and my purse in the truck. I was careful to keep my keys in my hand (because I've locked myself out before). I realized I forgot something inside, so I ran in really quickly to get it.

I came back out to the truck and pulled the door handle. LOCKED. No big deal, right? I had my keys in my hand. I looked down at my keys and searched for the key to the Toyota. It wasn't on my key ring. My heart sank and I felt a huge knot in my stomach. The blood felt like it was being drained from my body. I knew my baby was locked in the truck and I didn't have a key.

Frantically I ran back in the house and searched high and low every possible place a key could have been. Nothing. No key anywhere. I panicked. I tried to stay calm but the tears just started pouring out. Meanwhile, Jenna was sitting peacefully in her car seat looking at the dangly toys.

What to do next? I had no key and no phone. I panicked and was in a hysterical mess. I saw a huge rock in my yard (can you see where this is headed?)... I decided to try and break the window. (Looking back I realize this was really stupid). Jenna was in the back seat, so I picked a window farthest away from her in the front. She had the canopy up on the car seat, so I was hoping that would shield her from any glass.

I threw the rock at the window and it bounced right off. Damn! I tried again but harder. Nothing. I had no idea those windows are so hard to break unless you have a crow bar or hammer...So here I am with a scuffed up window still in tact and my baby still in the truck. Luckily it was only about 65 degrees outside and the truck was in the shade.

I decided I needed to find help (which is what I should have done in the first place). I ran across the street to a neighbor's house. She tried to calm me down (seeing as how I was hysterical) and she called a locksmith. He said he'd be there in 2 minutes. And he was. We anxiously waited for him to open the door. Jenna was still not crying at all.

He told me Toyota Tacomas are really hard to get into (Great, I thought). He fidgeted with the lock and his special tools for about 5 minutes. That was the longest 5 minutes of my life. He still couldn't get in. Jenna started crying. Mommy started crying again.

Poor locksmith felt so bad. He quickly grabbed some other tools that pry open the door so he could put a stick in to pull up the lock. Finally it worked. I grabbed that baby out the truck so quickly and pulled her to my chest, both of us in tears. She'd only been in there 20 minutes tops and it wasn't hot at all.

I spent the next several hours holding my baby, crying, feeling like a bad mommy, and playing the whole situation over and over in my head. I was tempted to blame my husband because I always keep a key to his truck on my key ring and I had a feeling that he took it off and used it and didn't put it back. But blame didn't make me feel better. I can't remember how the doors locked... I'm not sure if I accidentally pushed a button while I was loading up all of the stuff, or if I pushed the lock out of habit. Either way, it's my fault. I locked her in.

I feel even more guilty because not only did I lock my baby in the car, I scuffed up my hubby's window and now need to get it fixed AND had to pay a locksmith. I have an expensive mistake on my hands. Thank God the baby is okay. Thank God it wasn't hot outside. Thank God my neighbor was home and the locksmith came so fast. But I realize I need to quit beating myself up about it.

I debated posting this because it is quite humiliating and I feel so terrible about it. I get teary even mentioning it or thinking about it. But I spent some time reading other mom's blogs on their mistakes and it made me feel better. It made me feel human.

So to all those moms out there who've made a mistake - try to be gentle on yourself. We all have done it or will do it at some point. We can only hope our little ones are safe and sound. Try not to be so hard on yourself. Accidents happen.

FROM PARENTS.COM - What to do if you lock your kid in the car

There's nothing like the sinking realization that your keys are inside the car with a young child snapped into her car seat. Smile, and wave to the kiddo while you figure out your next move.

What You're Going to Do: Assuming your phone isn't in the car, call for help. Depending on where you are (a crowded mall parking lot, your own driveway), you have a few possibilities: Dial 911, and some locksmiths will dispatch free assistance when a child is trapped in a vehicle. But rescue may be even closer than a phone call, since some security officers have lockout tools. If you don't have a phone, enlist a friend or a passerby to get assistance for you. Don't leave the car!

If it's a warm day, cover the windshield and windows with blankets or newspaper to keep it from getting too hot inside. Obviously, leave gaps so you can see the kid and she can see you. Continue to smile, wave, and make faces. It is urgent that you get your child out of the car as soon as possible. If you're in a remote location without a means of getting help quickly, breaking a window is your only option. Pick the window that's farthest from your child, and get your hands on a heavy rock, a tire iron, or another hammerlike object. Be prepared to use a lot of force -- car windows are meant to be hard to break, but the corners are weaker so aim for one of them.

Lesson Learned: It's really easy to lose track of your keys when you're juggling small children. Forgive yourself and trust that the memory will keep you from ever doing it again. Don't forget to tell your tale to all your friends -- in vivid detail.

Giveaway: Shutterfly Stationary

I heart Shutterfly. Here in my small town, the only place to order photo products is Wal-mart. Let me tell you, I've tried ordering photos there on three different occasions - one time they damaged my film (this was from an old school camera), the second and third time their machine was down and I had to wait two weeks for my photos. So I said NEVER AGAIN!

Then I discovered Shutterfly. What I love about Shutterfly is how easy it is to use and how quickly you receive your photos. I've ordered prints of my hubby and I from different occasions and LOVED them.

Now that we have a baby we'll be ordering LOTS more photos and cards (they make great gifts for the grandparents). Can you imagine a photo calendar with themed pictures of Miss Jenna for every month? Adorable! I'm also interested in trying out Shutterfly's Party Invitations for my next event.

Don't forget it's also that time of year again to order some Photo Christmas Cards or Holiday Cards.

Jenna is Two Months Old!

My little pumpkin is already 2 months! Yikes!

Here's where Jenna is this month:

Weight: I think roughly 12 lbs (based on my scale at home). She's a big girl but has short little legs!

Size: She's outgrown newborn stuff and barely fits in the 0-3 month items. We're movin' up to 3-6 months pretty soon!

Eyes: Still dark greyish. I think they'll turn brown

Hair: Some of it looks like it's fallen out... I hope she doesn't go bald!

Milestones: She smiles now! We went for our first stroller walk a few weeks ago. She seems to enjoy it! She's also starting to make more noises.

Favorite things: She loves her mobile above the changing table. We've also discovered she HATES baths but LOVES showers. She must have an old soul or something...

Now for the pics!

I tried so hard to get her to smile, but every time I held the camera up the smile would disappear and she would study the camera... maybe next month!

Time for a closeup...

Check out her socks that look like shoes! Too cute!

New Blog Title

When I started this blog I had no idea what I would write about or what direction it would take. Now, one year later, I felt it was time for a new name. I decided that "Marcie's Blog" was not very creative or original.

I wanted something to encompass my life, personality, and topics I blog about the most. I decided on "The Simple Things." It's the simple things in life that bring me the most joy. Things like watching my husband bathe our daughter, cuddling with my baby every morning, having a family BBQ, and playing with our pugs.

So I hope my readers like the new name and stay tuned for a newly designed blog coming soon!
